From guesthouse to 4-star superior hotel in Merano
Looking back
1394
First documented mention of Pienzenau Castle in Obermais/Merano. The name Pienzenau dates back to a Bavarian noble family whose best-known representative was Hans von Pienzenau. The vineyards and grounds once belonging to the castle were sold over time.
1971
Ernst and Helene Hofer from the Passeiertal valley purchased one of these plots.
1972
A small yet refined guesthouse was established here with 15 rooms and an indoor pool.
1975
The guesthouse later became the hotel. Robert Hofer, the couple’s eldest son, rented out the hotel together with his wife Ingrid.
1979-2000
The Hofer family acquired another plot of land opposite Pienzenau Castle where they built a new guesthouse. The first daughter of Robert and Ingrid Hofer, Patrizia, was born followed seven years later by her sister, Sabrine. The couple ran the hotel as well as the bed & breakfast.
2001
The Pension Hofer guesthouse was transformed into the 4-star superior Hotel Pienzenau am Schlosspark with 30 rooms. The panorama roof terrace was planted with endless roses and offers views across the Etschtal valley and spa town of Merano.
Today
